Lanternflies are being spotted all over the area , and people, despearate to get rid of the menace, are installing lantern fly sticky paper on trees. Unfortunately, to make the paper good at catching lanternflies, it must be so sticky that it catches wildlife, too. This week we got our first victim - this catbird. He lost so many feathers (see photo) that he will probably be with us a half a year until they grow back - and he is the most lucky victim we’ve ever had. Most don’t make it - most die of their injuries, or shock, dehydration, or people’s home remedies to remove the animal from the paper. PLEASE don’t use this sticky paper, or any sticky trap outdoors. If you must do so, please place it underneath hardware cloth (galvanized steel “chicken wire”) so that birds and other animals cannot get trapped.
It's that time of year again - Lanternfly season
